Curriculum
Library/Media instruction is an essential part of every student’s K-12 educational experience. Elementary students are taught how to use the Library Media Center and the various types of resource materials available to them here. In addition, basic research elements are introduced at this level which enable students to access, evaluate, interpret, and apply information from print and non-print materials to their grade level projects and written assignments.
Students also learn valuable information literacy skills embedded into the K-5 New York State Next Generation Learning Standards; and linked to the Empire State Information Fluency Continuum – a K-12 framework for the instructional aspects of the Library program. This framework is based on three standards that form the basis for the skills and strategies that are essential for students to become independent readers and learners. The ESIFC is endorsed by the School Library Systems Association of New York State and are aligned to the AASL Standards for the 21st Century Learner.
